Kovalam, lying along the Malabar coastline in the Indian state of Kerala, is one of the most popular resorts in the region and has developed from a sleepy fishing village into a major tourist destination. The resort, whose name means ‘a grove of coconut trees’, is scenic and peaceful, with golden sands flanked by greenery and both palm and coconut trees, and as well as a relaxing base, is an important centre for health and meditation.

Kovalam is home to a wonderful beach area – made up of mostly golden sands, with partial stretches of black, due to the minerals present on the beach, and the resort is composed of three small crescent shaped beaches, all separated by high cliffs. The most popular beach in Kovalam is the Lighthouse Beach, which lies at the south of the resort and is the main tourist beach. In the centre lies the beach of Hawar, mainly used by local fishermen, and to the north of Kovalam is the tranquil and undeveloped Sumudra beach. There is a large fishing community in Kovalam, whose traditional wooden boats line the shores, and who offer boat trips along the coastline to experience the fantastic sunrise and sunsets. The calm blue waters of the Arabian Sea, with its’ sheltered coves, offer ideal conditions for swimming, and diving and snorkelling are both available in Kovalam.

There is a great choice of accommodation in Kovalam, to suit all budgets, with many of the large resort-style hotels having private beaches and extensive facilities. Plenty of excellent restaurants line the beach and offer both Indian and Western food, with the delicious fresh fish and seafood a speciality. Kovalam has established itself as a major centre for health, wellness and rejuvenation, with numerous Ayurvedic salons and massage parlours, as well as the many yoga and meditation centres, offered throughout the resort. There are a number of Hindu temples in Kovalam, and the capital city, Trivandrum, is just 16km away.
