Beach
The palm-fringed sandy beach has plenty of quiet spots for relaxing sunbathing, as well as convenient water-front bars and cafes. The local hotels have free sun loungers for guests, and the waters are shallow, however swimmers must always pay close attention to the warning flags.
 
Sports
Windsurfing and body boarding can be enjoyed at the beach, and activities offered by hotels in Kotu include swimming, tennis, table-tennis, squash, volleyball and skittles.
 
Birdwatching
The resort's location between the river and the sea guarantees an abundance of birdlife, with the region a popular destination for ornithologists. The African wetlands of Kotu Creek welcome many varied species, both resident and migratory, and bird watching safaris can also enjoyed throughout the area. 
 
Wildlife
The Bijilo Forest Park is a lush tropical reserve home to varied foliage, wildlife and birds, as well as scenic walking trails, whilst Abuko Nature Reserve is known for its crocodiles. Other local species to spot throughout the area include monkeys, chimpanzees, warthogs, mongooses and waterbucks.
 
Bike Rentals
Bikes can be hired from the hotels and offer a good way to get out and explore the surrounding area and back-country.
 
Golf
Golfers don't have far to travel for a round in the sun, with the 18-hole Fajara Golf Course located just north of the resort, situated between the coast and Kotu Creek.
 
River Cruises
Trips along the Gambia River take visitors along scenic mangrove creeks, and take in local flora and fauna as well as numerous traditional riverside villages. James Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, located in the Lower Gambia River is a popular attraction.  
 
Local Market
The Kotu local craft market is lively and colourful, with a huge range of traditional handicrafts and goods, such as batiks, tie-dyes, jewellery and wood carvings - all making excellent souvenirs.
 
Day Trips
Cities to visit include the bustling Serekunda and the capital, Banjul, a vibrant centre with a rich history, as well as a busy harbour, and good choice of markets and shops, whilst the traditional fishing village of Tanji offers a real taste of African life, at a quieter pace.
