The Town of Korcula
The main town on the island of Korcula, has a small population but offers plenty for visitors, making an ideal base from which to explore the rest of the island. A host of monuments, cafes, hotels, restaurants and galleries will keep you occupied, none more so than the 15th century cathedral of St. Marco, which was built by the same local craftsmen who utilised their skills in the beautiful cities of Venice and Dubrovnik. Featuring incredible works of art, the most famous resident of the cathedral is the "Lady of the Island”, an iconic work of art which legend has it has protected Korcula in its darkest hours, including the infamous Turkish invasion in 1571.
The Beaches of Pupnat
Pupnat is the oldest part of Korcula and boasts architecture dating back to the Illyrian times. However, the best kept secret on Pupnat is the bay of Pupnatska Luka - one of the most beautiful pebble beach’s on the Island which is very popular and can be extremely busy in the summer.
The Island of Vrnik
A small island in the Korcula archipelago, Vrnik is easily reached via taxi-boats from Korcula harbour and has a number of secluded swimming spots with clear blue water. Vrnik is not only favoured by tourists, it is given the seal of approval from Korcula locals too – it is a popular Sunday excursion for many of the islanders.
Korcula Wine Tasting
A French phrase argues that a day without wine is like a day without sunshine, words of wisdom that have never seemed more appropriate than whilst on a holiday in Korcula. Both sunshine and wine have contributed greatly to the history of Korcula and due to the Mediterranean climate, Korcula wines have a specific quality and aroma which must be experienced. Vines planted by ancient Greeks have helped Korcula produce wines that are celebrated throughout the world. Indeed, the Greek writer Athenaios wrote centuries ago about the superior wine produced on islands of Vis, Hvar and Korcula. Day trips to Lumbarda, a small fishing village close to Korcula, is well known for its magnificent vineyards and production of a unique white wine known simply as 'GRK'.
Walking Korcula
Holidays in Korcula are popular for walking and hiking enthusiasts. Countless routes remain unexplored for the adventurous traveller, whilst several routes that are well known can be fascinating to follow. A walk around the picturesque Korcula can take in the spots of Zrnovo, Kocje, Zrnovska Banja, Pupnat, Kneze, Viganj, Kuciste and Orebic.
Windsurfing
Located In the southernmost part of Croatia, Korcula holidays are very popular with windsurfers. Despite being exposed to the sun for most of the day, a regular cooling wind enables fantastic sailing around the whole Island. For this reason Croatian and international sailing and wind surfing competitions regularly take place in both Korcula and Orebic.
Diving
Whilst on a holiday in Korcula, it is very much advised to try snorkelling in the warm and beautiful waters. Underwater there is much to look at, including fascinating species of fish, sea cucumbers and even octopus. Diving equipment can be purchased or hired locally.
