Kercem, located just 5 minutes from the capital city Victoria, is an ancient village offering a quiet secluded base, set amongst some of the most beautiful scenery on Gozo. Located in the south-east of the island, Kercem lies between the picturesque Lunzjata Valley and the stunning cliffs of Xlendi, and is a rural retreat, perfect for scenic walks and bike rides.
Holidays to Kercem – An unspoilt rural retreat
The area around Kercem is rich in history and folklore. Although the village was founded in the Middle Ages, archaeological discoveries date Kercem as far back as 4500 BC, with the area being the site of the first human settlement on Malta. Kercem is still home to many relics from the past, such as the historic windmill tower, and the numerous stone balconies throughout the village depicting the oriental crescent shape. There are many restored old stone farmhouses in the area serving as holiday homes, and visitors to Kercem will enjoy the peace and tranquility of the surrounding countryside. The fertile valley of Lunzjata, famous as a hunting ground for the Knights, is home to some natural springs and the greenest, most lush region on the island. Santa Lucija, next door to Kercem, is a tiny hamlet full of rustic charm, and one of the most unspoilt places on Gozo.
Holidays in Kercem – Offering many restored stone farmhouses
Although Kercem is home to holiday homes and apartments, it does not offer much choice in terms of shops and restaurants, with most holidaymakers content to make the short trip into Victoria for meals and supplies. The resort of Xlendi lies south of Kercem, and offers ideal swimming, snorkelling and scuba-diving in its’ beautiful bay, with some excellent fish restaurants on the seafront. Most of Gozos’ attractions can be visited whilst staying in Kercem, and a hire care is recommended to explore all that the island has to offer.
