Backwaters
The quintessential Kerala experience. There are many ways to explore the famous backwaters, with hundreds of Kerala backwater boat trips. Rent a canoe or stay on a romantic houseboat complete with chef. Highlights are the lush paddies at Kuttanad, the gorgeous Alappuzha region and the lakes and islands around Poovar and Bolghatty.

Wildlife
Kerala wildlife sanctuaries are highly evocative places. Highlights include guided walks and jungle picnics in the Periyar Tiger Reserve in Thekkady, the Eravikulam National Park at Munnar, the Snake Park at Parassinikadavu and wonderful boat trips at the Kumarakom and Periyar sanctuaries for elephants, bison and birdlife. Kerala birdwatching has an international reputation. Kerala bird sanctuaries are particularly good for wading and migratory birds.

Vegetarian Food
Even the most hardened carnivore will succumb to the delights of Kerala cuisine. Try Kerala classics like masala dosa for breakfast or a light lunch. Fantastic snacks, plenty of coconut, banana, mangoes and spices, amazing multi-course vegetarian feasts and superb curries. Simple local restaurants are packed with character.

Walking in Kerala is constantly fascinating, whether a leisurely stroll along beaches to observe fishermen at work, pottering through lush green paddy fields, exploring tea plantations or more serious walking in the highlands at Munnar or Wayanad.
