While just inland from the coast, visitors to Kamilari can easily enjoy several nearby beaches. The spectacularly long sandy Kalamaki and Komos beaches are just over a mile below the village. Both are excellent places to swim and are uncrowded. Another favourite beach to visit is the famous ex-hippy haven of Matala with its beach caves and cliffs. Matala is just 3 miles from Kamilari. Obviously a much bigger selection of tavernas bars and shops can be found at these resorts.

Holidays in Kamilari – Walks, ancient sites and slow village life
Kamilari is in the middle of the south coast of Crete and makes a good quiet base for exploration of the island. Kamilari should appeal to those who like exploring on foot as there are many lanes and paths into the surrounding countryside and gorges. The ancient site of Phaistos is a walk away as is the ancient site of Agia Triada. Fishing and horse riding are other favourite Kamilari holiday activities if you are not spending the day on the beach or just enjoying sleepy rural village life.
