The Village

This working coastal village offers charm and character, and a relaxing base showing the slower side of traditional life in Crete. Activities here are limited to strolling around the town and along the waterfront, leisurely drinks and meals in the local tavernas and generally sitting back and taking in the breathtaking views.

Beach

The Blue Flag beach at Kalives is the main focus of the resort, stretching along the bay and boasting clear, safe waters for swimming, and backed by scenic mountains. There is a choice of waterfront tavernas for refreshments, and in general, this family-friendly resort stays relatively quiet year-round. Other beaches in the bay such as Almyrida and Kalami offer alternatives for sunbathing.

Water Sports

Water sports are available in Almyrida, just along the coast, and include windsurfing, kayaking, catamaran sailing and snorkelling, with fishing trips also on offer.

Sports

Hotels offer swimming pools, tennis courts and gyms, and there is bike rental available, as well as horse-riding - both ideal ways to explore the region and discover the beauty of the countryside, well-known for its stunning wildflowers.

Walking

As well as cycling and riding, walking is a popular activity, with the rugged Lefka Ori Mountains providing a host of good routes, as well as the coastal region and neighbouring hillside villages. The region is also popular with bird-watchers.

Dining

A main feature of any holiday to Kalives, dining in the tavernas and cafes is a delight, with restaurants serving a range of authentic Cretan food. As the town is set amongst olive groves and vineyards, the cuisine features plenty of local produce.

Day Trips

Chania is just 15 minutes away, and well-worth a visit to take in the Venetian harbour and enjoy extensive shopping, whilst the historic town of Rethymnon and the capital, Heraklion, is within reach. Day trips to Knossos, the Samaria Gorge and Spinalonga Island are popular, and a hire car enables visitors to tour the north coast and its sights.
