Local sites
Kalamata is ideally placed to tour the southern Peloponnese, with its rich array of historic and well-preserved archaeological sites. Famous spots to visit including the Byzantine capital Mystras, Nestors' Palace in Messini, Olympia, the site of the original Olympic Games, the castle of Methoni and the caves of Diros.
Town centre
The capital of Messinia, Kalamata has a fascinating old town to explore, with a historic centre home to churches, museums and a 13th century castle with wonderful panoramic views. With a lively main square and cosmopolitan town centre, Kalamata has plenty to offer the visitor with its large selection of shops, bars, restaurants and cafes, and its vibrant harbour, the main port in the Messinia Bay.
Walking
During the spring months, the area around Kalamata attracts many walkers and hikers, keen to explore the regions' beautiful countryside and coastal trails. Travel along the ancient mule paths ('kalderimis') that lead from village to village, and discover the natural charm of the area with its landscape of fertile olive groves, dotted with Byzantine churches and secluded hamlets.
Nature
In addition to walking and hiking, the many scenic paths and trails around Kalamata are ideal for horse riding and cycling, whether it be leisurely treks along coastal paths or energetic bike rides up and down mountainous terrain. Nature-lovers will delight in the landscapes' selection of plants and wildflowers, and bird-watchers will find a rich variety of species in the nearby hills and valleys.
Water sports
The marina in Kalamata offers many boat trips, with fishing, sailing and windsurfing all popular activities. Boasting Blue Flag beaches along its beautiful stretch of coastline, visitors can either relax in the Mediterranean sun, or try snorkelling or scuba-diving in the crystal-clear waters. Day trips to Crete are also an option, with a regular ferry service leaving from the port at Kalamata.
Cultural events
Summer is a great time to visit Kalamata as the city offers a host of cultural events, including a film festival, dance festival and a traditional folk festival, which takes place in the castle. Concerts, theatre and other dance performances are also held frequently here.
