Our review of Kalamata
A cosmopolitan city with a traditional character, Kalamata, the largest in the southern Peloponnese, has a great deal to offer the visitor. Sitting in a peaceful and unspoilt part of mainland Greece, Kalamata boasts stunning sandy beaches, a historic old town bursting with age-old tradition and a location surrounded by beautiful lush scenery and charming villages and hamlets. With a good choice of hotels and apartments, and a lively city scene, the seaside resort of Kalamata is an excellent choice for those looking to delve into the history and culture of the region, being a gateway to many of the areas' archaeological sites. Located in one of the most fertile parts of the country, Kalamata is best-known for the plump black olives grown here, regarded as the best in the world.

I'd recommend the seaport of Kalamata as a base if you are interested in hiring a car and touring the area - so many ancient sites to see including Olympia and Mystras, the old Byzantine city - what a beautiful drive. "The landscape around Kalamata is truly beautiful - if you like walking you'll have plenty of choice along the charming little paths and trails that lead through the hills and valleys, and the Taygetos Mountains are really stunning, particularly in late May when we went. Next time we plan to do an organised hiking tour here."
