Johnson’s Point - caribbean holidays in splendid isolation
Johnson’s Point offers a quiet, unspoilt beach in the beautiful south western corner of Antigua, the largest of the British Leeward Islands. It is said to offer the best view of neighbouring volcanic island Monserrat, glowering in the distance. Johnson’s Point is midway between English Harbour in the south and the capital St John’s in the north, making it a great base for exploring the island. The beach at Johnson’s Point has historically been known as Turners Beach after the family that privately owned it for many years. Thankfully now it is available for all to enjoy. It’s a quiet spot with few facilities, which makes it perfect for lazy sunbathing, snorkelling to admire the colourful tropical fish, or strolling along the sands and making the most of the cooling breezes coming in off the sea. A beach bar serves cold drinks and great seafood. All this is just 20 km from the island’s airport, VC Bird International.
Staying around Johnson’s Point will give you easy access to some of Antigua’s many points of historic and natural interest.
Nelson's Dockyard at English Harbour dates from 1743, and is Antigua's most popular attraction. The dockyard’s charming old buildings have been converted into restaurants, an art centre and a market. A nautical museum that features one of Lord Nelson's telescopes is also to be found here. It’s no surprise that Nelson’s Dockyard attracts yachters from all over the world.
From Johnson’s Point you are 16 km from Betty's Hope, the site of Antigua's first sugar plantation. A visit here will reveal much about Antigua’s past economic dependence on sugar cane production. Ruins of two stone windmills and a distillery can be seen at Betty‘s Hope, and a small visitors’ centre gives great insights into the island‘s history.
Johnson’s Point - take in the tropical scenery along Fig Tree Drive
While staying at Johnson’s Point don’t miss the scenic route along Antigua’s south west coast, Fig Tree Drive. Bananas are known as ‘figs’ on the island, so expect to see plenty of banana trees, as well as old mango trees, coconut palms and grazing cattle.
