Water sports Jamaica is the perfect location for those who take water sports seriously and those who just want to have fun, for young and old, expert or beginner (lessons are freely available). There are plenty of equipment hire locations and great spots for parasailing, windsurfing, jet skiing, waterskiing and surfing.
Rafting and White water rafting Jamaica features some excellent white water rafting, with courses for experts and beginners, although those not seeking an adrenalin thrill can enjoy superb views of the rainforests and mountains by hiring someone to punt them on a bamboo raft through the gentler waters of the Rio Grande river.
Scuba-diving and snorkelling Scuba diving is extremely popular, with excellent facilities all around the island and with many licensed operators around Jamaica offering certification courses. The miles of coastline and clear Caribbean waters offer a chance to see wrecks, coral reefs teeming with marine life. With an average year-round sea temperature of 27°C (80°F), Jamaica is an underwater paradise for anyone with a snorkel.
Sailing The Caribbean is well-known for its near perfect sailing conditions, although the currents around Jamaica can be difficult. Sailing and catamaran lessons are available and even non-sailors can enjoy the seas by booking a trip on a glass-bottomed boat.
Hiking A guided tour through the interior of the island is an experience no one could ever forget. Jamaica's Blue Mountains and lush Rio Grande Valley offer walks for all ages and abilities amidst hummingbirds, orchids and spectacular views.
Horse riding Hiring a horse is an excellent way to see the Jamaican countryside. There are mounts suitable for beginners and experts. Rides can vary from a trek into the mountains lasting two or three days to an hour or so along the beach. Riders can even take their horse for a swim in the Caribbean.
National Parks The Blue Mountain and John Crow Mountain National Park is absolutely stunning. This incredible area of mountain forest has more than 800 species of endemic plants and is one of the largest migratory bird habitats in the Caribbean. There are also more than 500 species of flowering plants of which almost one half are native to Jamaica. Visitors should arrange for a guide to show them the park either on foot or from the comfort of a 4WD vehicle.
