Ithaca is almost cut in two by two mountain ranges linked by a narrow strip of land, with Vathi in the south, Frikes and Kioni in the North. Vathy, the capital of Ithaca, is set at one end of a perfect natural bay. Traditional Greek neo-classical houses line the promenade with more houses stretching up into the hills. Vathy is a pretty port, with tavernas, a town hall, a smart square and palm. Vathi's beach is at Loutsa about a mile away.

In the north of Ithaca, Kioni bay is breathtaking with little coves, backed with olive groves. Frikes, a pretty fishing village, is just up the coast from Kioni with many tavernas and in one of the nicest areas of Ithaca.
