Istron is a small laid-back and relatively undeveloped resort 7 miles south of Agios Nilkolaos and 50 miles south o Heraklion airport. The town is on an outstandingly dramatic and beautiful stretch of the north coast of Crete. Istron is great for those who are looking for superb beaches and beautiful surroundings and not for those wanting to party. It is reached by an exciting winding coast road that drops to the resort, which is set in the striking Mirabello Bay.

Golden Beach is the Istron holiday favourite along with Karavostasi and Church Beaches. These beaches, along with several smaller coves, offer unspoilt settings for good swimming in clear water. Nights here are likely to be spent in the modest selection of quiet tavernas and restaurants. You will find charming old-style places in the surrounding villages. An Istron holiday is set amongst beautiful scenery with hills, olive groves, peninsulas, bays and tiny coves.

There are several lovely traditional small Crete villages in the hills nearby like Pirgos, Prina and Kalo Horio. Exploration of the area is rewarded with monasteries, ancient sites and outstanding coastline in both directions. Visit nearby Agios Nikolaos, a busy lively harbour town sitting on the western end of the scenic Gulf of Mirabello, for nightlife and a bigger selection of shops. Popular excursions include the ancient sites at Gournia and Lato and the Venetian fortress at Ierapetra. Longer trips could include the island of Santorini and a boat trip to Chrissi Island. A good bus service runs to Agios Nikolaos.
