Ierapetra Things to Do

Beaches
There's a host of great beaches around this historic working town, ranging from the long shingle stretch east of town, to the Blue Flag beach at Myrtos, and the isolated Koutsounari - all offering relaxation in the glorious weather the south coast is known for.

Water Sports
As well as swimming and sunbathing, the beaches offer facilities for water sports, such as scuba-diving, windsurfing and sailing.

Old Town
Ierapetra, the fourth largest town on Crete, has an charming Old Town to stroll around, (also known as Kato Mera) with plenty of evidence of its previous occupants - the Romans, Venetians and the Turks - in its architecture, and shops to browse in along its narrow medieval streets.

Sights
For the history and culture-lover, the area has some interesting churches to visit, such as Afentis Christos, as well as the Museum of Ierapetra, historical sites such as the Venetian fort and castle, and attractions such as the house Napoleon visited.

Boat Trips
The harbour, dominated by the Venetian Fortress, is the place where many boat trips leave from, including daily departures to the uninhabited Chrissi Island, known for its volcanic rocks, blue waters and sandy beaches, and coastal cruises.

Dining
Eating and drinking is a big part of any holiday to Crete, and the town has a great selection of restaurants and tavernas, including many waterfront cafes in which to enjoy both the food and the views. Traditional Greek food is served, with the emphasis on fresh fish, and local ingredients such as olive oil, cheese and almonds.

Day Trips
Ierapetra is well-placed to tour the eastern part of the island, such as Sitia, Koutsouras or the lively Aghios Nikolaos, and the charming mountain villages that lie inland. In the north, the capital, Heraklion, and the upmarket Elounda are also within reach.
