Hikkaduwa Weather

Hikkaduwa is a popular beach resort in southwest Sri Lanka, a few kilometres from the historic town of Galle and 98km south of Columbo. The resort is characterised by a typically tropical climate, and sees year-round hot humid weather, with the main tourist season in Hikkaduwa running from November to March.

 

The best time take a holiday in Hikkaduwa is from January to March, as this period sees dry weather, high temperatures and plenty of sunshine. The average temperatures are between 24C - 25C, the sea temperatures are lovely and warm - around 28C - 29C, and these months only see 94mm - 100mm of rain. Hikkaduwa also sees around 8 hours of sunshine each day during this time. April and May sees the hottest weather, with an average temperature of 28C, and a high level of rainfall. The summer months of July to September also see high temperatures, often up to 27C and the rainfall does decrease during this time, however the resort still sees more rain than in the winter - around 170mm - 200mm. Hikkaduwa is a popular surfing destination, thanks to the reliable waves seen during the main surfing season from November to March.

 

The southwest coast of Sri Lanka tends to see more rainfall than the rest of the country, with October and May, the wettest months in Hikkaduwa, averaging 340mm and 304mm of rain respectively. November is also very wet, with 296mm of rain falling each month. Temperatures remain high, however, and there is still a minimum of 6 hours of sun each day.
