Beaches
The white sand, shallow water and protective reefs make the nearby Ans de Sables beach popular with swimmers, sunbathers and romantics, while the trade winds attract windsurfers. Most hotels offer windsurfing instruction and equipment. Elsewhere, the choice of beaches is superb. From the south of the island beach-hunters can head west for the Caribbean shores, with either black volcanic or tropical white sand, or east, where there are stunning beaches washed by the Atlantic and home to all kinds of wildlife.

Exploring the island

To describe St Lucia’s scenery as spectacular - with its vibrant rainforest and steaming volcano - is almost an understatement, and there are many ways to explore including horseback, jeep safari, hiking, jungle biking, helicopter tours and yacht charters.

Soufrière and the Pitons
The nearby fishing town of Soufrière sits on an active volcano and boasts some of the most spectacular scenery on St Lucia. The skyline is dominated by the Pitons, a UNESCO World Heritage site consisting of two steep-sided volcanic plugs, Gros Piton and Petit Piton. For a different view visitors might like to take a boat trip and see where scenes for Pirates of the Caribbean were filmed. The area is also known for its sulphur springs with natural therapeutic qualities, which could be useful for anyone recovering from a guided hike to the top of Gros Piton.

Castries
St Lucia’s capital is a natural harbour on the sheltered north-west of the island with several idyllic Caribbean beaches within easy reach. There is duty-free shopping at Pointe Seraphine and a colourful market for local produce and crafts. Sights include the magnificent Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and the area around Morne Fortune which bears witness to the Anglo-French struggle for control of the island and offers superb coastal views.

Maria Islands Nature Reserve
These two tiny islands just off the coast, Maria Major and Maria Minor, are home to the Maria Island ground lizard, many species of bird, unspoiled forest a beach and a coral reef.

The sea
St. Lucia's warm clear waters and spectacular reefs offer a perfect environment for both beginners and expert scuba divers and snorkellers and there are plenty of centres for equipment and lessons. You can arrange boat charters for game fishing or trips to see the local dolphins, whales and turtles. In early summer the giant leatherback turtles slowly emerge from the sea to lay their eggs on Grande Anse Beach and overnight camps are available for visitors.

Vieux Fort
The nearby town of Vieux Fort offers restaurants, nightlife, street parties, music, markets and superb views from the lighthouse at Moule-a-Chique.
