Heraklion Holidays – Historic capital of Crete
Heraklion is the capital of Crete with a population of around 120,000.
Heraklion can make a fine base for touring as the city is in the middle of the north coast of Crete, east of Rethymnon, and is the transport hub of the island. The harbour has ferries leaving for countless destinations. Heraklion is set on a hillside, retaining plenty of evidence of its extraordinary history that has seen the presence of Romans, Venetians, the Byzantine Empire and Turks. Heraklion archaeology museum is one of the most important museums of its kind worldwide. The justly famous Minoan Palace at Knossos is close by.

Heraklion is cosmopolitan and attractive. Many visitors spend part of their holidays strolling around a city with many fine Venetian buildings, fountains, churches and squares. The Venetian port with its fortress and Venetian walls are favourite Heraklion walks. The town has an outstanding outdoor market bursting with locally produced herbs, spices, nuts, fruit and cheese. The centre of city life here is the main square of Elefteriou Venizelou, a fine place for people watching from the terrace of its many cafes. More bars and tavernas are found in some of the narrow pedestrian streets near the square, along with some of the best shopping on Crete. Visitors can enjoy the resort's lively nightlife, with something for everyone including cultural events and concerts in the summer season. The capital is well-provided with restaurants. Malia and Hersonissos are two famous partying resorts close to the capital.

Heraklion is a great base for visiting a varied assortment of beach resorts on the north coast; Amoudara with an excellent 3-mile long sandy beach popular with swimmers, Kokini Hani a pleasant relatively simple friendly resort with good uncrowded beaches, modest nightlife and  two fine long beaches popular with swimmers, Gouves a fairly large developing seaside tourist resort with excellent beaches and with  quiet traditional villages inland, and Fodele a pleasing tiny hillside village with good views and set in a lush green valley full of orange groves and fruit trees.
