Along this stretch of coast lie the resorts of Maspalomas and Playa del Ingles, both sharing the wonderful 8km stretch of golden sandy beach, one of the best throughout the whole of the Canaries, and backed by many large hotels and apartments complexes. The popular beaches, with their calm shallow waters and convenient facilities may get crowded, but the stunning sand dunes of Maspalomas provide secluded spots for sunbathing, making this area a favourite spot for nudists. Where Maspalomas is fairly upmarket with a relaxing atmosphere, Playa del Ingles is a lively haven for British tourists, catering to the masses with English pubs and bars. Further west lies the resort of Puerto Rico, the sunniest resort on Gran Canaria, with an imported beach, excellent watersports facilities and party atmosphere. For those in search of a more relaxing Gran Canaria holiday, the smaller resorts can offer a slower pace, such as San Agustin and Playa del Cura. A trip to the capital, the bustling Las Palmas with its’ extensive duty free shopping, traditional restaurants and original architecture, makes an interesting day trip and offers visitors a taste of the real Gran Canaria.
