A holiday in Gouves can easily find tranquillity by exploring the fertile fields and rolling hills inland, with pretty traditional villages, ancient monuments and two charming monasteries. Two miles inland the original village of Gouves sits on the hillside of Mount Ederi and overlooks the resort which is officially known as Kato Gouves (Lower Gouves). The old village has a few tavernas for a change from the main resort centre below. Nearby Gouves holiday attractions are the archaeological sites in Kokkini Hani and Amnisos, the monastery of Saint John, and Skotino Cave, one of the most impressive in Crete. Popular Gouves holiday excursions include the ancient sites at Knossos, Heraklion archaeological museum, Samaria Gorge, the island of Spinalonga and even a boat trip to the island of Santorini. Frequent buses run to Agios Nikolaos and Heraklion.
