Galle Things To Do
The Dutch Fort
The town's massive fort constructed in the 17th-century by the Dutch is the largest remaining fortress in Asia built by Europeans. Now declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the fort is the major tourist attraction in Galle. The fortified granite walls house the old part of town, and visitors can stroll along the top of the walls, ideally at dusk or dawn, to see beautiful views across the harbour.
Old Town
Galle's rich heritage is still very evident in the buildings and architecture found here, with colonial influences from its Dutch and British rule seen in the old town, which is best explored on foot or by tuk-tuk. There are charming narrow streets to stroll through, and a number of museums and churches to see.
Beaches
Most visitors to Galle head to the nearby sandy beaches along the coastal road, such as Unuwatuna, Weligama and Tangalla, for a relaxing day sunbathing and swimming, or indulging in water sports such as snorkelling and surfing. Local beaches such as Ahangama are ideal for watching fishermen practice the unique and traditional 'silt fishing' method.
Shopping
The old town has plenty of opportunity for shopping, and in particular specialises in jewellery and gem-cutting, as well as selling plenty of fabrics, furnishings, and arts and crafts such as woodcarvings.
Cricket
Cricket fans can head to the large cricket stadium, which hosts international test matches, and is known to be one of the most picturesque stadiums in the world, bordered on both sides by the Indian Ocean.
Day Trips
The surrounding areas offer plenty of attractions such as paddy fields and lush plantations, all of which can be seen on scenic drives around the region. The bustling city of Columbo is accessible by taxi, train and bus, with other day trips including Kalutara Temple, the Yala Wildlife Sanctuary, and Koggala Lake, which is ideal for bird-watching, and home to a Museum of Folk, Art and Culture.
