Fodele Holidays - Tiny attractive traditional Crete hillside village
Fodele will appeal to those looking for a small quiet Crete village retaining its traditional charm. The village is a little inland from the coast, just 12 miles from the capital Heraklion, 15 miles from the airport and 33 miles east of Rethymnon. Fodele is on the north coast of Crete. It is popular with older couples and those appreciating the charm of traditional Crete village life with fine beaches just a mile or two down the hill.

The setting for a Fodele break is a pleasing tiny hillside village with good views and set in a lush green valley full of orange groves and fruit trees. Tree-covered hills run down to the coast where there are two good beaches. The Pandomandri River runs through the village and is the place for several romantic simple taverna terraces; the setting for nightlife here, along with the tavernas and bars you will find by the side of the beaches. You need to go elsewhere if you are looking for noise! Fodele has a charming village square with a statue honouring its most famous resident the great Cretan painter Dominikos Theotokopoulos, better known as El Greco. The house where he was born is a local attraction and there is also a small museum.

Holidays in Fodele can enjoy two beaches; the main beach on a protected broad bay, reached from the principal road and the second beach to the west, only reached from the village. This second beach remains very unspoilt and much quieter. When any day visitors have departed, you can enjoy Fodele in complete peace. A holiday here can explore the lovely green countryside, orchards, farms, and mountain pastureland. Fodele has bus connections to highly recommended Venetian Chania Town as well as Rethymnon and Heraklion. Good excursions are to ancient sites at Knossos, Heraklion’s archaeological museum, Samaria Gorge, the island of Spinalonga and even a boat trip to the island of Santorini.
