TUI Travel - First Choice & Thomson Holidays 2007 Merger
First Choice Holidays merged with the tourism division of TUI AG, Thomson Holidays in September 2007 in order to combat a fall in sales which had resulted from the demise of the traditional package holiday. The merger created a new company now known as TUI Travel which is based in London. By merging, First Choice Holidays and Thomson Holidays are expected to save around £100 million a year and create anticipated revenue for TUI Travel of more than £12 billion a year. Thomson Holidays and First Choice admitted in a joint statement that the reason behind the merger was a change in travel tastes as consumers demand flexibility and choice, seek new life experiences and look to access travel content through a number of points of sale, most notably the internet.
