The harbour The lively marina and waterfront is the hub of the town, a place where traditional wooden gulets, fishing boats and motor cruisers line the bustling harbour. The start of many day trips and boat rides, the port offers the ideal spot for a relaxing drink or meal, whilst enjoying the spectacular marina views and activities. Most of the towns' restaurants and cafes can be found around and behind the marina.
Shopping Tuesday is Market Day, and an ideal time to wander around the streets, taking in the sights and sounds of this colourful scene. Both locals and tourists alike come to buy everything from fresh produce, meat, fish, spices, and traditional handicrafts such as lace and leather, to tourist bargains such as cheap 'designer' clothes. The Old Town, with its cobbled streets, is a great place to find a Turkish rug or kilim.
Beaches The nearest beach to Fethiye is Calis, just 4 km away, a wonderful stretch just around the bay, which is known for its stunning sunsets. Slightly further is the famous Blue Lagoon at Olu Deniz, one of the most photographed beaches in the world, just 12 km away. The white sands and sparkling seas found along the Turquoise Coast around Fethiye offer relaxing sunbathing and safe swimming, with a spectacular mountain backdrop. To beat the crowds, head to the many secluded coves around the bay.
Water sports The beaches around Fethiye offer the water sport enthusiast plenty of choice. Activities range from pedalo, banana boat and jet ski rides, to water skiing, wind surfing, kayaking, sea biking and parascending. An ideal base for sailing, yachts can be chartered from the port at Fethiye.
Scuba diving Diving is popular in the Gulf of Fethiye, with the clear blue waters being home to a host of reefs, sunken ruins, wrecks as well as colourful marine life. Choose from a range of centres and schools offering professional instruction for all divers, ranging from one-day trips to full PADI courses.
Sports and leisure Olu Deniz is one of the best places in Turkey for paragliding, with many companies offering trips up to the top of Babadag Mountain and thrilling tandem rides down to the beach at Olu Deniz. The pine-clad hills are ideal for scenic walking and hiking, with mountain biking and horse riding also available.
Trips and excursions Fethiye is an excellent base from which to discover the beauty of the surrounding area, offering a host of boat trips from its busy harbour. Choose from a sunset cruise around the bay, visit the Twelve Islands, or enjoy a luxurious multi-day trip on a gulet, traditional wooden fishing boat. Other day trips include Kayakoy Ghost Town, Butterfly Valley, Dalyan with its mud baths, Saklikent Gorge, or the charming harbour town of Kalkan.
