Holidays in Estoril Situated just 25 km west of Lisbon, Estoril is an elegant upscale beach resort on the Portuguese Riviera, against the backdrop of the Sintra Mountains. Established in the 1920’s, Estoril was modelled on the Cote d’Azur and has developed into a chic cosmopolitan getaway, now a playground for royalty and the rich. During World War II, Estoril became a safe haven for exiled royalty from all over Europe, who spent their time gambling in the casino, the largest in Europe.

There is a good choice of beaches to visit on the Estoril coast, all with white sands and calm waters, including Carcavelos, the areas’ most popular, a good size and a favourite of surfers, and the beach next to the casino, Tamariz, with its’ excellent choice of hotels. Between Estoril and Cascais is Praia do Guincho, a large unspoilt sandy beach with sand dunes, pine trees, lots of vegetation and interesting caves and caverns, and one of the best spots for surfing and wind-surfing.
Holidays in Estoril – Plenty of things to see and do Whilst holidaying in Estoril, there are plenty of things to enjoy besides the beaches. The town is home to some fantastic restaurants, including both reasonably priced bars and cafes and traditional upscale establishments serving authentic Portuguese fare – especially the local fish and seafood. Casino Estoril, the largest in Europe, is a big attraction and offers great restaurants, a cabaret show and an art gallery. Motor enthusiasts should visit the famous Estoril Autodrome, and those in search of culture will enjoy the music museum, and beautiful 16th century church of St. Anthony. Seven golf courses can be found along the Estoril coast, and other activities include tennis, horse-riding, biking, walking, as well as a sailing school, fishing, boat trips, water-skiing and windsurfing.
