Estoi Town
Many describe this Eastern part of Portugal’s Algarve as ‘the real Algarve’. Less developed and without the touristy trappings you might find in the resort areas, you are free to explore quaint unspoiled towns such as Estoi. Small and picturesque, set into the side of a hill just north of Faro, Estoi is perfect for a relaxing break and the ideal base when discovering the rest of this beautiful region.

Shopping

Estoi itself has everything you need with some essential shops, a bank and a few bars and restaurants. Most of these are located around the town’s main square and during the evenings you can find good food and a lively atmosphere. Every second Sunday of the month one of the biggest markets in the area descends on the town, providing the opportunity to pick up a real bargain; you can buy everything here, including goats and horses!

Estoi Palace
For something brighter, you can visit the Estoi Palace which dates back to the 19th Century. Painted pink and interwoven with stunning blue Portuguese azulejo tiles, it is the perfect backdrop for the palaces spectacular gardens.

Culture
If you are looking for a bit of culture, just one kilometre outside Estoi are the wonderfully preserved Milreu Roman Ruins. This Roman villa dates back to the 2nd Century and is well worth a visit. There is a pretty 18th Century church in the centre of the town with gorgeous views.

Day Trips

From Estoi you can easily enjoy a day trip to Faro to take pleasure in the shops, restaurants, historical churches and museums that it has on offer. For some more active choices, enjoy the Ria Formosa National Park, which lies right on your doorstep and provides miles of walking tracks, bike rides and stretches of beautiful sandy beaches. You will also find several good golf courses reasonably near to the town.
