Essaouira enjoys a semi-tropical climate with over 300 days of sunshine each year. The temperature varies little from season to season, thanks to the wind, which locals call the alizee. This is constant and makes the beaches in and around Essaouira extremely popular for windsurfers and kite surfers. It benefits everyone, in fact, as, together with the cooling influence of the Canaries current; it means that Essaouira escapes the stifling heat that can make Marrakech uncomfortable.

Essaouira Weather - Perfect for winter sun breaks
Essaouira enjoys sun all year round, with a maximum daily temperature of around 21ºC in December as well as July, making this a perfect destination for anyone looking for winter sun. The wind gets stronger between the months of May and September, when the beaches are most busy with surfers and windsurfers, which is perfect as it acts almost like a natural fan – becoming stronger as the sun gets hotter. The temperature in Marrakech, slightly further north but a little over 2 1/2 hours inland, is a sweltering 37.5ºC in August compared to a pleasant 22ºC in Essaouira. The sea temperature is also fairly constant, going from 16ºC in January to 20ºC in late summer.

The best time to come depends on what the visitor intends to do. The small amount of rain that falls each month from October to May shouldn’t put anyone off. Windsurfers may prefer summer when the wind is stronger. Those wishing to combine a stay here with a visit to the High Atlas Mountains should bear in mind that snow can make the roads difficult in winter, while anyone wishing to go into the desert would be advised to avoid high summer. What is indisputable is that with the clear blue sky contrasting with the whitewashed houses, Essaouira itself is an extremely beautiful place to stay at any time.
