Elounda Holidays
Elounda Holidays – An established Crete favourite
Elounda is a resort on the east coast of Crete, 6 miles north of Aghios Nikolaos. The town is set on a bay facing the Sinalonga Peninsula, which is connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway. The small island of Spinalonga sits in the entrance of the bay and has a Venetian fortress. Elounda is really a combination of several villages which have effectively merged. The whole area is a particularly scenic setting for a beach break and although this former fishing village has grown to become an established favourite Crete destination, it still possesses a certain relaxed charm and an attractive mix of facilities, old and modern areas, and a vibrant square and busy appealing harbour.
Elounda Holidays – Beaches, water sports, cafes and nightlife
Elounda beach is a good stretch of grey sand and shingle with plenty of water sport facilities and waterside tavernas. It is popular for swimming and especially snorkelling, with clear water, hidden coves and the attraction of Olous, an underwater ancient city. Visitors here can take advantage of three more sandy beaches in Damnoni which are close to hand and offer more isolation and privacy. Elounda getaways feature the pleasures of the beach with its fine views of the mountains, as well as the many tavernas, bars, cafes and restaurants found in a resort that is one of Crete’s most famous tourist attractions. A cosmopolitan crowd frequent the resort, including the wealthy with their yachts in the harbour, which is another focal point in Elounda; an eye-catching cosmopolitan area with plenty of cafés for a leisurely drink and people watching. The town square is another centre of Elounda social life and the resort’s increasing popularity means plenty of lively discos and pubs at night.
Holidays in Elounda – Plenty of nearby attractions
Elounda holidays are not complete without a visit to the island of Spinalonga and its 16th century Venetian fortress, which is reached by regular boats leaving from the harbour. Holidays here could include snorkelling, boat trips, archaeological sites, exploration inland on foot and fishing trips. A popular excursion is to the lively fishing town of Aghios Nikolaos, reached by regular buses and just 6 miles down the coast. Longer excursions include Knossos with its Minoan palace, Samaria Gorge, Fiesta with its Crete mountain village charm, and Sitia with its splendid Vai beach.
