Egypt has set itself the aim to attract 14 million tourists by the year 2011.
The statement was made by Zuhair Garrana, the Minister of Tourism in Egypt as he gave a speech on tourism and future tourism cooperation with Arab countries.
Garrana commented that in 2006, tourism in Egypt had witnessed a remarkable growth as the number of incoming tourists peaked at 9.1 million, with an increase of 5.5% over year 2005.
The Minister went on to say that the future of tourism in Egypt had been carefully planned with the opening of new tourist destinations like Mersa Alam and the Mediterranean Coast.
A large influx of arrivals to Egypt from China and India is expected to help the African country achieve its goal.
Promoting activity holidays is also high on the agenda as promotion of sailing holidays, golf holidays and shopping holidays is planned.
