Weather in the Dominican Republic
The weather of the Dominican Republic is semitropical with lots of sunshine and an average temperature of 25°C all year round. With an average sea temperature of 26°C, the republic is perfect for water sports and for anyone looking for an idyllic beach holiday. According to UNESCO, it has some of the best beaches in the world, with their white sands, blue skies, coconut palms and green vegetation. Most people visit the Dominican Republic in the winter, as the weather is just a little cooler, but it is well worth considering a visit in spring, when there is less humidity, or autumn.
Dominican Republic weather – A tropical paradise
The heavy rainfall from May to August is enough to keep much of the island green and fertile. There is very little rain in November and December. For sun-worshippers this really is a paradise with temperatures particularly high in coastal areas and the climate often referred to as ‘the endless summer’. In winter, coastal regions generally experience highs of around 28°C during the day and lows of about 20°C in the evening. This compares to around 31°C during the day and 22°C at night in the summer, when the humidity can make it feel considerably warmer. As you would expect, the mountain regions are much cooler.
Weather in the Dominican Republic – Sunshine and blue skies
The Dominican Republic is at the centre of the Caribbean hurricane belt, although direct hits tend to be no more than once every ten years. Prime hurricane season is August and September. More often than not, visitors to the Dominican Republic at any time of the year can expect long periods of sunshine and blue skies as, even in rainy season, rainfall tends to be concentrated into short, heavy bursts. Throughout the year, cooling sea winds and trade winds make the temperature more pleasant and provide ideal conditions for sports - Cabarete is well known as one of best places for windsurfing and kite-boarding in the world.
