The most captivating day trip on a holiday in Menorca is probably a day spent along the ancient streets of the religious capital Cuidadella. Here is Menorcan architecture and the chance to learn about the history of the island. The city has kept its original Spanish character while holiday resorts have dominated other areas of the island. Cuidadella – Some lovely cafes, bars and restaurants Cuidadella offers a fantastic day out, if you are staying in one of the nearby resorts there are often daily bus journeys into the city centre. The British moved the capital to Mahon in the eighteenth century but Cuidadella remained as the religious centre. The Spanish love to celebrate and there is a statue of a rearing stallion on entering the city this represents the fabulous ‘fiesta de San Juan’ at the end of June each year. Cuidadella is best explored by walking, as there is so much to see in the small back streets. The harbour is the ideal place to watch the world go by from some lovely cafes, bars and restaurants right by the waters edge. Cuidadella – A true Mediterranean city Cuidadella offers so many interesting places to see, there’s the Cathedral in the Plaza de Pio XII or the Palace Torre Saura in the main square Plaza de's Born, and from here it is a short stroll to the old town. The streets are wonderfully narrow with the true Mediterranean feel. The city has such an authentic atmosphere with plenty to do and see. There are lively bars for nighttime entertainment mixed with the backdrop of fisherman’s nets. Cuidadella is guarantied to charm most holiday visitors. |
