Crete Weather - Plenty of sunshine
Being the most southern of all the Greek Islands, Crete holidays enjoy plenty of sunshine and the longest of all the summer seasons in the region, lasting from April to October. With its temperate Mediterranean climate, the island sees hot dry summers, and mild winters, and remains a popular destination all year round.
Weather In Crete - Boasts the longest summer season in Greece
April sees temperatures of 18C, and over 8 hours of sunshine every day. Springtime is the ideal time to beat the crowds, and perfect weather for sightseeing and outdoor activities such as walking and cycling. During May the temperature rises to 20C, reaching 22-24C in June and peaking at 27C in the peak season month of August, when the beaches of Crete are busy, and there is almost 13 hours of sunshine every day. The strong 'meltemi' winds that blow from the north through all of Greece grow very strong during the summer, especially during August, creating everything from gentle breezes to extreme gusty winds, but serving to lower both temperature and humidity.
Crete Weather - Mild winters with plenty of sunshine
The sun still shines between 9 and 11 hours during the months of September and October, with the temperatures remaining above 20C. Winter sees the start of the rainfall, with January and February being the wettest months, with lows of 12C and a minimum of over 4 hours of sunshine. There are significant variations throughout the island, with eastern Crete being very dry and hot, with an almost desert-like terrain, and the western side seeing slightly lower temperatures and a greener landscape. Temperatures also vary between the warm coastal areas and the cooler mountainous regions, which sometimes even snow during the winter.
