things to do in corsica

Scenery
Where to begin? The stunning Balagne region has tiny coves and beaches, citrus groves, vineyards and picturesque mountain villages like Speloncato, Calenzana, Zilia, and Sant Antonino. Many of these villages have excellent restaurants. Other highlights are the Asco Valley, the Castagniccia, the stunning Cap Corse peninsula, the gorges of Restonica and Tavignano, the UNESCO protected Calanches of Piana and the entire dramatic west coast of Corsica.

Walking
No walking holiday in Corsica can possible take in all the available routes in one visit. There is superb Corsica walking among beautiful valleys, wild gorges and massive peaks, plus excellent coast and gorge walks. Unforgettable Corsica walks in the Zonza National Park, the stunning Alta Rocca and the Aiguilles de Bavella, which rise to over 5000 feet. Corsica walking trails are a Mecca for serious trekkers, culminating in the amazing coast to coast GR20.

Beaches
You will always find a spectacular beach or tiny cove in Corsica. Top Corsica beaches include Giulia, Algajola, Aregno and the unspoilt beaches beyond Ille Rousse. Great beaches around Porto Vecchio and Solenzara. The unspoilt beaches near Piana are favourite spots for popular Corsica naturist holidays. Idyllic Palombaggia beach is one of the finest in the Mediterranean.

Glamour and Nightlife
If you are in a quieter resort don’t miss out on top Corsica nightlife at Bonifacio harbour and stylish Porto Vecchio.

History and Architecture
The famous Haute Ville in Bonifacio is a must: a lovely ensemble of ancient houses, steep lanes, churches and medieval battlements, beautifully set on the white cliffs of a narrow limestone peninsula, and topped by a 9th century citadel. Also visit the medieval centre of Algajola with its citadel.

Romantic Dining
Corsica restaurants offer plenty of traditional cuisine and local wines. Every coast town will offer romantic waterfront dining.  Erbalunga has a nice little collection of rather classy restaurants. Inland villages will offer hearty country dishes.

Diving and Watersports
Diving holidays in Algajola enjoy a good reputation. Algakola beach offers rewarding snorkelling and windsurfing. Porto is a popular centre for Corsica diving holidays plus sailing and windsurfing. Good Corsica diving around the Scandola Nature Reserve, known for its marine life, and the Reserve Naturelle des Bouches de Bonifacio. All the major resorts like Bonifacio offer excellent watersports.

Corsica Trains
Take the amazing mountain train to Bastia, Ajaccio or Calvi. A great way to see the interior. An enchanting miniature train links Algajola with beaches between Calvi and Ile Rousse.

Corsican culture
Corsica has a long proud history and distinct culture. Visit Corte, a historic, fortified university town at the spiritual heart of Corsica. Stunning location among rugged landscapes and dramatic peaks. Erbalunga is known for its concerts, cultural events and renowned music festival. Visit the historic towns of Bastia and Calvi and soak up the atmosphere of any mountain village. Characterful festivals on the Cap Corse peninsula.

Roads
Non-walkers have tremendous drives to the Col de Bavella or the Rizzanese valley with its atmospheric villages. Zonza is ideally placed for exploring some of the most extraordinary roads on Corsica.
