Resort of Ciutadella Ciutadella, known as ‘Vella i Bella’ (the old and the beautiful), is situated on the west coast of Menorca, and this lively city offers a great day out for those holidaying on the island. On the opposite end of the island to the capital, Mahon, Ciutadella is a bustling city, with a population of almost 30,000, rich in Spanish history, with the architecture and atmosphere reflecting the strong Moorish influence. Ciutadella has a good choice of shops, restaurants and nightlife, and offers an interesting day trip for those who need a break from sunbathing, as well as a chance to see the real Menorca.
Resort of Ciutadella – Picturesque old quarter Ciutadella was known as the capital of Menorca, until the British and the French invaded the island in the early 18th century and moved the capital to Mahon, which had a larger port. So where Mahon has a distinct British influence, the city of Ciutadella still retains a very traditional Spanish feeling. The architecture is well preserved, including the town square and the cathedral, and the narrow streets of Ciutadellas’ old historic quarter are ideal for exploring on foot. The harbour, the smallest port in the Mediterranean, is lively and bustling, and lined with bars and restaurants, an ideal spot for watching the world go by. Ciutadella is the closest point on the island to neighbouring Majorca, and a ferry service runs from the port across to the resorts of Alcudia and Cala Ratjada.
Resort of Ciutadella – Great shopping and dining Many tourists visit Ciutadella for its’ fabulous shopping, and the city is well known for its’ chic boutiques and great leather shoe shops, as well as more traditional stores selling local goods and crafts. It is also home to a wide range of Spanish restaurants, and the islands’ specialities of fish, seafood, cheese and delicious pastries can all be sampled throughout the city, with many charming places to eat down on the quayside. Ciutadella also boasts some lively bars and jazz clubs for those looking for a good night out.
