Chowara Things To Do

Beach
The beach at Chowara is serene and peaceful - just a wide stretch of sand set at the foot of Chowara Hill, perfect for relaxing sunbathing. Kovalam Beach lies 9km away, and offers facilities such as cafes and beach bars, and water sports including kayaking, surfing and water skiing.

Fishing & Boat Trips
The area is a major fishing centre, with fishermen setting out daily on their simple wooden boats. Watch as they haul in their catch of the day, join an early morning expedition along the coast, or view the stunning sunset on an evening cruise. Catamaran cruises are popular, and deep-sea fishing is available at Kovalam.

Ayurvedic Medicine
Chowara is known as a popular ayurvedic centre, and is home to various spas and resorts all helping to rejuvenate, de-stress and eliminate health problems and conditions. Also here is a world-renowned Institute and Research Centre, with over 50 trained therapists and doctors on hand, where guests can enjoy yoga and massages, as well as daily treatment plans and special diets.

Shopping
There is a small selection of shops in Chowara, but Kovalam's markets are just a taxi or rickshaw ride away, and offer an array of handicrafts and items such as silverwear, jewellery and silks, as well as locally-made coir products.

Sights
Sights and attractions to visit around Chowara and Kovalam include a number of historic forts, palaces, churches and temples - such as Padmanabhapuram Palace and Sri Anantha Padmanabhaswamy Temple. Cochin and Trivandrum offer a city scene, whilst Varkala is a busier beach resort, home to a health spa and a Nature Care Centre. Inland tours and backwater river cruises are also available in the area.

Food & Drink
The cuisine in Kerala is known for its fish and seafood, and there are no shortage of places in which to sample the local food and drink. Dishes feature plenty of spices, coconut and rice, with simple fish stews and curries on menus everywhere. Try the local tipple of kallu - fermented coconut palm sap.

Local Culture
Watch a colourful performance of Kerala's dramatic and passionate art form, the Kathakali dance, with troupes performing in centres and hotels around the area, or enjoy a display of Kerala's martial arts form, Kalaripayattu, said to be the oldest in the world.
