Chania Weather

Chania, the largest town in western Crete, sits on the north coast of the island, and like the rest of Crete, experiences a typically-Mediterranean climate, with hot dry summers and mild winters. Attracting many visitors each year, the resort is known for its long tourist season, running from April to October, and sees average daytime highs of 30C in the height of the summer.

 

April sees the start of the holiday season, when the resort experiences highs of 20C, and 8 hours of daily sunshine. This spring weather attracts those looking to fully explore the quieter western side of the island. Enjoy touring and sightseeing in the city whilst conditions are comfortable and getting out in the blooming countryside on walks and bike rides. Easter holidays are perfect in Greece.  Evening temperatures at this time reach just 12C, and the town can expect about 30mm of rain during the month. May heats up to 24C, when there is an increase in sunshine of up to 10 hours each day, and by June and July, Chania is boasting highs of 28C and a constant 12 hours of sun. August daytime averages rise to 30C, and during this peak summer period the waters of the Mediterranean reach 25C and the beaches of the region remain busy. There is practically no rain all summer in Chania, and very warm night-time temperatures of 21C mean ideal conditions for alfresco dining and evening city strolls.

 

September sees slightly lower temperatures of 27C, but still a constant 10 hours of sunshine, and by October the resort experiences highs of 23C, and a slight increase in rainfall - up to 79mm during the month. The town does see the wettest weather of the year in winter - with January receiving up to 137mm - but still mild weather, with the temperature only dropping to 14C.
