Chania Things to Do

Old Town
The historic Chania boasts a rich and varied heritage, seen in its Old Town full of aged buildings, churches and museums, and displaying Venetian and Turkish character. Visitors tend to stroll through the narrow streets on foot - the best way to appreciate the charm of the well-preserved city centre, and evidence of its historic past.

The Harbour
The Venetian harbour is a major attraction of the city, and, as well as being a historic feature, houses many open-air cafes, bars and waterfront tavernas, and remains the hub of Chania's entertainment centre.

Museums
There's a host of museums to tour, including the Maritime Museum, the Archaeological Museum and the Byzantine Museum - all offering an education in the island's history.

Dining
Fantastic dining abounds in both the Old Town and modern part of the city, with everything from traditional Cretan fare to international cuisine, and fresh fish featuring heavily on the menu. There are plenty of atmospheric waterfront restaurants with sensational views to choose from, as well as hidden tavernas well-loved by locals.

Beaches
Visitors have many local beaches to visit, such as Kalatha, Stavros, Platanias, Stalis and Aghia Marina, as well as numerous hidden coves for quiet sunbathing and swimming.

Boat Trips
Chania Harbour offers a range of departures, with many boats heading out along the north-west coast to a host of remote beaches, and regular glass-bottomed boat cruises. There are trips to the island of Grambousa and around Souda Bay, as well as ferries heading out to Pireasus port in Athens.

Day Trips
Head inland to one of the many traditional villages, or take a trip to Crete's most famous attraction, the Samaria Gorge, for a strenuous hike. Travel east to visit Rethmynon, or along the north coast to the upmarket resort of Elounda.
