Chania Holidays

Chania Holidays - Beautiful and atmospheric old town
Chania Town (sometimes spelt Hania) is the principle town of west Crete, on the island’s beautiful west coast and about 9 miles from the airport. Breaks here are based around the Old Town; an interesting picturesque neighbourhood of narrow paved lanes, flower-decked houses, tastefully renovated buildings, attractive gardens, walls, castles, churches, monasteries, ancient sites, art galleries and museums. The town has a rich and varied cultural heritage having been occupied by the Venetians and being the island capital under the Turks. The Venetian harbour area is the centre of the nightlife here; a colourful and friendly area full of tavernas, restaurants and bars with plenty of atmosphere until late at night. There’s a cosmopolitan mix of flashier places by the waterfront and more traditional places for the locals in the narrow backstreets. Chania has some of the best shops in Crete and a notable public market in the town centre.

Chania Holidays - Historic town base with the pick of the coast
Chania breaks are not for those who want to sunbathe from first thing in the morning, but it does make a great stylish base for exploration of a superb selection of beaches, secluded coves and coast resorts. Chania beach is to the west of the town and there are several more excellent swimming beaches just outside the town. A huge beach stretches west of Chania Town to the quiet resort of Kolimbari. Visitors to Chania Town can take advantage of the proximity of several more superb long open beaches on the west coast of Crete, often backed by verdant green hills and citrus plantations and olive groves. A holiday in Chania Town could include a visit to the small sandy coves found around the Akoriti area and the wonderful tiny picturesque bay at Stavros.

Holidays in Chania – Beaches, resorts and mountain villages
Holidays here should include visits to the charming unspoilt traditional Crete villages found inland in the mountains. The village of Therissos for example, is considered one of the prettiest on the island. Visitors to Chania Town can enjoy the town's lively neighbours like Platanias and excursions to all the many attractions of the region. Chania has an important port at Sounda bay and is therefore an excellent base for boat trips to many varied neighbouring resorts on the south-west coast of Crete as well as the north coast and the Greek mainland. Chania benefits from excellent bus and road connections too.
