Holidays in Carvoeiro
Carvoeiro, situated close to the main town of Lagos and almost 70km from Faro airport, is a well-established resort set amongst the stunning coastal scenery of the Algarve. Originally a sleepy fishing village, Carvoeiro is now one of the most photographed resorts in the Algarve and is highly regarded as a family-friendly holiday destination.
Holidays in Carvoeiro – Beautiful sandy beach
The beach at Carvoeiro is charming - set in a small picturesque bay, backed by the stunning sandstone cliffs found all along the coastline, with crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming and snorkelling in. Boat trips are popular, especially to Algar Seco, with its’ fascinating rock formations, and fishermen can still be seen hauling in the catch of the day on Carvoeiro beach. Other good beaches to visit include Ferragudo, with its’ wealth of watersports, the smaller more intimate cove of Praia da Marinha and the ‘smugglers’ beach’ at Carvalho. The main village square is the hub of Carvoeiro, and a great place for a drink whilst watching the folk dancers and singers perform, and the streets of the resort are home to some good fish restaurants, bars and shops. There are still some authentic traditional houses found in Carvoeiro, sitting happily alongside the newer types of tourist apartment complexes and hotels.
Holidays in Carvoeiro – Plenty of daytrips in surrounding areas
Carvoeiro is ideally placed for the numerous golf courses throughout this section of the Algarve, with most less than half an hour away, and the resort offers a good tennis facility and lawn bowling. Whilst staying in Carvoeiro, there are plenty of nearby places to visit, including the cosmopolitan Portimao, which lies just 10 minutes away, with its’ bustling port and great shopping, and the village of Silves, just a few kilometers inland with its’ medieval charm and castle ruins. Porches is a great place for local hand-painted ceramics, and nearby Lagoa is worth a visit to tour the vineyards and sample the local wine.
