Top attractions in Cape Town include the cable-car trip up to the top of Table Mountain, where visitors are rewarded with the stunning views of  the city and the coast, and a ferry trip to Robben Island, the prison where the former South African president Nelson Mandela was held for so many years. The beaches of Cape Town offer endless stretches of white sand, with those on the Atlantic side sometimes too chilly for swimming but boasting spectacular sunsets, where locals and tourists alike congregate to relax, sunbathe, people-watch and enjoy activities such as scuba-diving and surfing, volleyball and horse-riding. Cape Town is famous for its' Wine Routes', the most well-known of these being the Stellenbosch region, just 45 minutes from the city, where visitors go to visit a variety of cellars for wine-tasting, and travel through the glorious vineyards and green countryside. The Garden Route in Cape Town is one of the most stunning drives in the world, this coastal route taking in the amazing natural beauty of the region, spanning lush green forests, picturesque towns and white sandy beaches. Whilst on holiday in Cape Town, there are plenty of new experiences in store - swim with the penguin colony at Boulders Beach, take a whale-watching boat trip or visit one of the local townships.
