Beaches
Calheta has a sandy beach and a sheltered area for swimming, as well as its lively marina which sees plenty of activity. Calheta is a great place from which to take a whale or dolphin-watching boat trip or a big-game fishing expedition. Facilities for windsurfing, water skiing and scuba diving are also close by.
 
Sports 
The town has a hotel spa and leisure centre which is open to the public, and there are two courses for golfers - one at Santo da Serra and the other at Palheiro. Other activities include tennis, squash, hang-gliding and paragliding.
 
Walking and Hiking
Calheta has numerous footpaths and hiking trails to follow, as well as the traditional 'levadas' that criss-cross the island, with routes to suit all levels. The rich mountainous scenery and stunning coastal views create ideal conditions for active visitors who are keen to explore the area.    
 
Biking and Horse Riding
In addition to walking and hiking, exploring the natural beauty of the area by bike or on horseback is popular, with the sheer cliffs above the sea and the verdant mountains home to bridle paths and trails. 
 
Calheta Town
Explore the history and culture of the charming town, one of the oldest parishes on Madeira, and still a traditional settlement. Two main attractions include the modern 'Casa das Mudas' art and exhibition centre, and one of the island's last remaining sugar mills (tours are available).
 
Day Trips
Other places to see whilst in Calheta include the waterfalls at Rabacal, the aquarium at Porto Moniz on the north coast, and the various gardens and parks on the island, which display of some of the Madeira's exotic blooms. Buses run from Calheta to Funchal, which is worth a visit for its vibrant and elegant town centre, and boasts excellent sightseeing, shopping and dining.
