Historical Places
Separated by an arm of the Ria Formosa, Cabanas is quite and isolated. It can be reached by boat from Tavira. Tavira, along with Lagos, is one of the most architecturally attractive towns in the Algarve and its origin dates back to around 2.000 BC. During the occupation of the Algarve by the Moors this town was considered of great importance due to its fishing industry. The castle there offers amazing view of Tavira. You can also visit the Roman bridge in Cabanas on Gilaro River.
Fishing
Cabanas name was derived from the huts that was erected around 18th century by fisherman. Fishing is one of the major activities in Cabanas. There is also plenty of restaurants along the seafront with fresh fish on the menu. To the west of Cabanas lies the 'Octopus Capital' of the Algarve - Santa Luzia. Octopus is considered a delicacy although it can be an acquired taste!
Park
The Avenida Ria Formosa Natural Reserve in Cabanas is well worth a visit. It runs the length of the lagoon and has a shaded area with green fields and trees, with beautiful flowers. This park can be enjoyed by all ages. It's surprising what you find when you explore this park!
The Fort
The Forte de São João da Barra stands in the heart of the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve. Although it has since been restored and is now privately owned, its imposing stone walls remain along with the square of arms, well and stone water tank. São João da Barra is well worth a visit to see this beautifully preserved and interesting example of border fortification.
Beaches
Accessible beaches of Cabanas have footpaths, walkways, aid posts and disabled toilets all around the beaches. There are also restaurants that provide varieties of sea food, the food can be ordered on tables near the sea front in Cabanas which make dinning much more enjoyable. The beaches in Cabanas are popular due to its pleasant climate. Visitors can enjoy water sports, sunbathing, and swimming in Cabanas.
