Beaches and water sports Although a busy port, Bourgas has its own attractive beach. There are plenty of water sports – windsurfing is particularly popular. Further afield are blue flag resorts with white sandy beaches such as Dyuni, Nessebur and Sozopol. Dyuni and Sunny Beach, with its aqua parks and unbeatable list of activities, are any water sports enthusiast’s dream. There are excellent diving facilities nearby, with centres catering for beginners and experienced divers and a chance to explore coral reefs, shipwrecks and even sunken military aircraft.
The city by day Bourgas has elegant boulevards with cafes, excellent shops and many art galleries, including Bulgaria’s oldest, the Bourgas Art Gallery. The Archaeological Museum gives an insight into the city’s long history, while the Ethnographic Museum reveals much about the area’s culture and traditions with exhibits including Koukeri masks, fishing paraphernalia, traditional costumes, fabrics and embroidery. Nightlife As Bulgaria’s largest port, a cosmopolitan University City and tourist resort, Bourgas has a wide choice of restaurants, clubs, bars and casinos. Visitors could find themselves being entertained by Russian dancers or a DJ playing progressive house. For those who like something quieter, the Sea Gardens offer a chance to relax in a café or wander around fountains, statues and attractive flower beds.
Festivals Opera, classical music, children’s choirs, Latin dance and flowers are all celebrated in what is known as the City of Festivals. Amongst the largest each summer are the International Folklore Festival, with singers, dancers, parades and workshops, and Bourgas and the Sea, a music festival and competition. Within easy reach are Sozopol’s Apolonia arts festival in September and the legendary Nestinari fire dancer’s festival in the tiny village of Bulgari in June.
Nature Parks and lakes Otmanli Park is a large forest with nature trails. The Ropotamo Nature Reserve is known for its magnificent water lilies. The Strandja Nature Park is an unspoilt mountain area offering activities such as hill walking, cycling, fishing and river cruising. Bourgas is surrounded by wetlands: four lakes and two lagoons, which are home to many rare species of flora and fauna, include Lake Mandrensko, a freshwater reservoir and Lake Pomorie, which supplies salt and mud for local health treatments.
Sozopol For years this old fishing port, 34 km south of Bourgas, has lured artists and writers and it now attracts Hollywood stars. The old town has cobbled streets, wooden buildings and bags of charm.
Nessebur A short drive north is the old town of Nessebur with its mediaeval churches, Greek and Roman ruins. This UNESCO heritage site also features fine beaches, discos and restaurants.
