Baga beach
Baga’s beach is small but very beautiful, nestling between the much livelier Colva and Calangute beaches. In comparison it is peaceful and tranquil, a lovely getaway from the usual hustle and bustle. At Baga beach the sand is brown rather than gold or white, and you’ll discover a lovely grove of palm trees growing close to the water’s edge to give an exotic desert island feel. At the other end of the beach you’ll be mesmerised by the sea spray crashing against an impressive pile of sharp black rocks.  If you’ve got kids with you, steer clear of the sea – there’s always a strong rip current and unless you’re a strong swimmer, it can be very dangerous.

Fishing & Swimming in the Baga River
The nearby Baga River is famous for fishing, and fishing fans flock here from all over the world.
But the river is also great fun for kids as well as for less confident adult swimmers who’d rather avoid the strong sea currents.

Nearby Mapusa and Panaji
Baga beach is only about ten minutes away from the town of Mapusa and just half an hour from Goa’s capital, Panaji. You’ll find regular, cheap bus services into both towns where you can explore more of India’s colourful, exotic culture, shops and markets.

Picnics at the Medicinal Springs
Close by Baga beach, within easy walking distance along a track surrounded by cashew nut bushes, are the medicinal springs at Mottant. This is lovely spot for picnics, relaxing and bathing in the waters which locals believe have medicinal powers… an Indian version of Bath spa!

Baga Retreat House
Overlooking the village of Baga, on a hilltop with a delightful view across the clear Arabian sea, is the historic Baga Retreat House. Dedicated to St Francis Xavier, it is also called the Casa de Retiros and is well worth a visit.

Shopping and eating
Baga has developed more quickly than any other are of Goa. The village’s main road is lined with bars, tandoori restaurants and terraces, and craft shops selling local hand made goods.

Flea market
Baga holds a flea market every week, which starts early and goes on all night! You’ll love rummaging for exciting, exotic jewellery and crafts. You can buy delicious local snacks and they even erect a stage for local musicians to perform on.

Wildlife

Try dolphin and crocodile spotting on the nearby Mandovi and Zuari Rivers. The banks of these swampy semi-salty mangrove rivers are thickly forested to give you an authentic jungle experience!
