British Airways is to end the deal which lends its name to the London Eye. British Airways originally owned one third of the shares in the London Eye, but sold its share to the Tussauds Group in 2005 and at the same time, signed a deal to continue to sponsor the world-famous attraction in name only. However, British Airways have since confirmed that their “sponsorship priorities have changed,".
Since the 2005 sale, Tussauds has been subsumed by Merlin Entertainments. They are now seeking a new title sponsor for the London attraction with reports suggesting Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Atlantic airline having already expressed an interest.
One of the last events at the London Eye to carry the British Airways name will be for the London Eye Fiat 500 launch. Fifty years after its launch, the Fiat 500 is back and the London Eye is hosting a launch party to celebrate the occasion with live entertainment at a ticket only media event on 21st January. There will be live entertainment, including music from Mika and a stunning light display.
The new Fiat 500 is to be launched exactly 500 hours into the New Year, with organisers offering a lucky few the chance to win tickets to the event, as well as design and win their own Fiat 500. The British Airways London Eye is operated by the London Eye Company Limited, a Merlin Entertainments Group Company.
