Beaches

The fishing village of Almirida lies in the Bay of Souda, and is home to a small sandy beach with safe shallow waters, especially good for children. Other secluded beaches and hidden coves along the coast offer even quieter spots for peaceful sunbathing and swimming.

Water Sports

Water sports available include windsurfing, scuba-diving, snorkelling, sailing and canoeing, and there are also fishing trips on offer.

Boat Trips

Boat trips cruise around the bay and along the coast, with a popular excursion heading out to the island of Karga, home to ancient ruins and a refuge for migratory birds.

Walking & Hiking

Western Crete has long been a favourite with walkers, and the countryside around Almirida offers a wealth of terrain for enthusiasts to explore. A number of trails and marked paths lead through the hillsides full of olive groves and take in traditional villages, monasteries and ancient sites.

Sports

Various hotels and apartments offer swimming pools and tennis courts, and there is mountain biking and horse-riding available - an excellent way to get out and explore the region.

Dining

Almirida has a host of tavernas, cafes and restaurants in which to linger, which serve up traditional Cretan food, including a variety of freshly-caught fish, and featuring plenty of local produce.

Local Area

This charming region is well-worth exploring, and there are archaeological sites to tour, and many sleepy towns to stroll around, displaying a traditional character of Crete. Head to Kambia, Kokkino Horio, Vamos or Douliana, or visit Plaka, the biggest village in the region.

Day Trips

Chania is a short trip from Almirida, and an interesting city to visit, with its Venetian harbour and charming city centre, whilst the historic Rethymnon lies to the west. Famous sites such as Knossos, and the Samaria Gorge can also be visited from the town.
