ABTA has forecasted a set of holiday trends suggesting that forthcoming events in 2008 will play a big part in generating tourism. With almost 70 million holidays abroad taken by UK residents in 2007, the numbers are set to increase into 2008, with Portugal and Turkey holidays providing early signs of particularly encouraging bookings.
Destination hot Spots for 2008 include China, which is set to continue its significant growth with the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing providing a welcome boost, whilst ABTA also confirm that the 60th anniversary of the state of Israel will generate added tourism in 2008, helped by recent new flights which now operate to Tel Aviv.
Other destinations set to achieve strong growth in 2008 include Singapore, Australia and Colombia, whilst events like Euro 2008 in Austria and Switzerland will draw football fans despite the home nations failing to qualify for the tournament.
It is not only major events that are acting as a catalyst for tourism in 2008, airlines to can play a big part by opening up new routes. Ryanair has recently announced aggressive expansion plans for 2008, whilst new BMI flights for example, will ensure that Aleppo, Syria's second city will benefit from added visitors.
In terms of the most popular holiday destinations, there is little surprise that Spain will continue to be the number one holiday destination for British tourists in 2008, with ABTA citing major events such as the Expo Zaragoza 2008 and the Formula One street course grand prix in Valencia as key elements in keeping Spain holidays as number one.
